AUGUST: SAFE SPACE DIORAMAS WITH TRACI JOHNSON
This interactive workshop guides participants through creating miniature dioramas that represent their personal concept of a safe space. The session begins with community-building activities and explores what elements make spaces feel secure and welcoming. Participants brainstorm their vision, then spend hands-on time constructing their dioramas using provided materials. The workshop emphasizes individual creativity and self-expression while teaching basic construction techniques. Sessions conclude with optional sharing time and group reflection on the creative process and insights gained. Designed to be flexible and adaptable to participant interests, this workshop combines art therapy principles with practical crafting skills to promote emotional well-being and self-discovery through creative expression.
Brooklyn-born artist Traci Johnson delves into the complexities of femininity through a captivating blend of textile design, installation, and sculpture. A distinguished Fashion Institute of Technology graduate, Traci’s artistic foundation fuels their exploration of self-discovery within societal expectations placed on women. Their work transcends the limitations of traditional art, gracing the walls of prestigious galleries, including Canada, Museum of the African Diaspora, Bravin Lee, and Morgan Lehman. Beyond the binary, their art celebrates the future where embracing all aspects of identity leads to a more genuine self. Abstract patterns, vibrant hues, and unconventional shapes have become tools for Traci to subvert societal structures built around the feminine form. Their work fosters a safe space for emotional exploration, encouraging viewers to explore a freer authenticity beneath idealized versions of womanhood. From Traci: “My work is about reclaiming who you are, deeply inside of who you would like to be.” This powerful sentiment resonates through their art, creating a visually stunning and emotionally charged experience.
