There are many ways to get involved in Washington Square Park! We welcome enthusiastic gardeners, docents for our greeter/guide program, photographers, and those who want to pitch-in at our monthly clean-up days. We are also happy to engage your other skills to support Washington Square Park.
Committed Volunteer Programs
If you have any questions or want more details about the programs below, please email email@example.com.
Our Clean Team is a group of dedicated volunteers who help keep Washington Square Park clean with a regular commitment to litter pick-up. The program takes place when NYC Parks staff are present, currently 7:30am-8pm, 7 days a week and you can volunteer anytime within this time frame. Following a required orientation, we recommend a shift of 45 minutes once a week and ask for a 6-month commitment. Applications are currently closed.
Our Wednesday Weeders are a small group of committed volunteers who work under the guidance of gardening staff at the Park. You’ll learn about the horticulture of the Park while lending a helping hand. Wednesday Weeders commit to at least 6 hours of service each month, of weeding, mulching, and planting. Volunteers must complete an orientation for this program, but no previous experience is necessary. Applications are currently closed.
Interested in photography? We’re always looking for volunteers to spend time taking photos in the Park and to help photograph special events. We ask photographers to volunteer approximately 6 hours each month and participation in an orientation session. Applications are currently closed.
Greeter/Guides – Washington Square Park Docents
Greeter volunteers answer questions from Park users on various topics, from park horticulture and history to events and happenings. Tour guides develop a tour of the Park under the guidance of Conservancy staff and lead groups on an exploration of the Park’s many features and functions. This program requires submission of an application, extensive orientation and a commitment of at least 4 hours per month (weekend afternoon shifts). Applications are currently closed.
Community Clean Ups
Spend a weekend day volunteering with us and give back to the Park you love! On the second Saturday of each month we hit the Park with a group of volunteers to keep things looking beautiful. Work consists of weeding, raking leaves, mulching, planting, and other work – whatever is necessary to keep Washington Square Park clean, safe and beautiful. No experience is needed for this program and there is no long-term commitment. Ages 14+ please. Monthly clean-ups run from spring to December.
Want to help with other special projects at the Park? These may include help with stuffing envelopes, special projects in the Park such as user counts, and other Conservancy special events. Email us for more information.
