Volunteer Coordinator (Seasonal)
Overview
The Washington Square Park Conservancy (WSPC) seeks a Volunteer Coordinator to oversee community and corporate volunteer programming in Washington Square Park. This new position will report to the Programs Manager and provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in many aspects of nonprofit program coordination. Additionally, you will join a small, dedicated team working to advance our mission of helping keep Washington Square Park clean, safe and beautiful. WSPC relies on volunteers to help maintain Washington Square Park, one of the busiest parks in New York City, offering monthly community clean-ups, consistent volunteer engagements for gardening and park maintenance, and corporate volunteer events. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing volunteer schedules and communication, acting as a liaison between the volunteers and NYC Parks staff, and working with the development team to set up and execute volunteer events for corporate partners. The ideal candidate for this role is a team player who is reliable, outgoing and comfortable interacting with diverse audiences, with excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects at once.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate all aspects of the individual volunteer program including recruitment, orientation and training, shift scheduling, and consistent communication with volunteers
- Manage volunteer portal (Bloomerang) by updating shift calendar and ensuring all volunteer data is entered and maintained
- Collaborate closely with NYC Parks team to understand volunteer needs and determine volunteer projects for both corporate and community volunteer events
- Submit and manage NYC Parks permits for all volunteer events
- Work with development team to coordinate booking of corporate events and maintain a shared event calendar
- Act as the primary point of contact leading up to corporate volunteer events, creating event overviews to share with corporate group leads and responding in a timely manner to follow-up questions
- Serve as the on-site lead for all volunteer events, including welcoming the group, giving an overview of WSPC history and mission, explaining volunteer project tasks, taking photos, and troubleshooting issues that arise during event
- Keep track of volunteer supplies inventory and order more as needed
- Execute thorough event follow-up, including soliciting volunteer feedback, inputting volunteer data, and sending thank-you emails to participants
- Work with communications team to generate content for website, emails and social media that highlights both corporate and community volunteer opportunities
- Organize and execute volunteer appreciation programs
- Compile information for grant reports and program evaluations related to the volunteer program
- Assist with facilitation of other public programs in the park, as needed
Required Qualifications:
- Experience working effectively with people of various backgrounds; experience with or interest in working with volunteers
- Ability to take initiative, manage several projects at once, and multitask
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Flexibility and adaptability; excellent problem-solving skills
- Exceptional communication and public speaking skills; comfort with speaking in front of a crowd
- Proficiency with Google Suite (docs, sheets, slides, etc.)
- Comfortable with and enjoy working outdoors
- Interest in nonprofit sector and/or volunteerism
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with program evaluation and reporting
- Understanding of various social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube)
- Experience using a volunteer management system
- Experience with Mailchimp or Flickr
Working Schedule
This position is seasonal (March–October) with the possibility of extension and/or becoming full-time. This position is predominantly in person in the office/park with some flexibility for remote work. Weekend and evening work will be required on occasion due to the nature of the position. The schedule (including whether hybrid, in-person, or remote) may change at the discretion of the Executive Director.
Salary & Benefits
Expected salary range for this seasonal full-time position is $27,000 – $32,000 for the 7 month term, based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include:

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and push 50 lbs. and perform physical labor when required in all weather conditions
- Ability to traverse stairs
- Ability to sweep, rake, and use gardening tools as needed
- Ability to stand for extended periods

About the Washington Square Park Conservancy
Washington Square Park is a beloved open space in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City. Spanning 9.75 acres, this iconic park with its signature arch and fountain is one of Manhattan’s most popular landmarks. The park serves many functions for a diverse usership, acting as a critical green space, village square, playground, mecca for music and art, a place for reading and contemplation, gym, campus quad, performance space, and more. The Washington Square Park Conservancy (WSPC) is a nonprofit organization working with NYC Parks and neighborhood groups to ensure that Washington Square Park continues as a diverse and historic urban green space through engaging volunteers and raising funds to help keep the park clean, safe and beautiful. WSPC was formed in 2012 by local leaders who saw a critical need for ongoing operational support, following the city’s $30 million capital renovation, in order to maintain its lawns and gardens, promote safety, and offer programming that serves a diverse community. WSPC is led by a full-time staff of four with oversight by a twenty three member board of directors.
