Something New is Taking Root in Washington Square Park
Jun 24, 2026

Something new is taking root in Washington Square Park.
If you’ve noticed work happening along the east-west spine of the park, you’re getting a glimpse of an exciting landscape refresh underway.
Led by the park’s Horticulture Coordinator, Tyson, this project includes removing rat burrows, refreshing and improving soil conditions, checking irrigation systems, and replanting garden beds with climate-adapted species selected to thrive in the park. Whenever possible, existing plants were carefully rehomed elsewhere in Manhattan through our partnership with NYC Parks Horticulture.

Funded by our generous community of supporters, the redesigned beds will gently mound toward the center, creating healthier growing conditions and a more dynamic landscape experience for visitors.
We look forward to these gardens remaining beautiful, resilient, and welcoming for years to come.
Stay tuned as the transformation continues!
