Washington Square Park is one of the most storied, historic, and culturally significant parks in New York City – a place known and loved both citywide and worldwide. The park is a tapestry woven together by the people who use it and bring it to life in endless ways.
Senior Citizens
Washington Square Park is a beloved gathering place for seniors living in Lower Manhattan. The park’s shaded benches, lush native blooms, and eclectic atmosphere make it an ideal place to relax, socialize, and enjoy daily outdoor recreation.
The Washington Square Park Conservancy is a proud proponent of older adult recreation in Greenwich Village through our free public programs. In the warmer months, invigorating morning dance sessions and gentle yoga classes come alive in Garibaldi Plaza. In Scrabble Plaza, local artist-led workshops promote creativity and cognitive health.
An all-season feature for older adults is the wide outer walking path that encircles the park. This flat, paved loop offers a comfortable route for regular walks, making it easy for seniors to stay active in the neighborhood.
Beyond the park, Lower Manhattan offers a strong network of programs and services designed to help seniors remain active and connected. Organizations such as Greenwich House provide arts, wellness, and educational programs for adults over 60. On the Lower East Side, University Settlement offers comprehensive older-adult programs, including exercise and nutrition services, and community events focused on healthy aging.
Community support is also available through Visiting Neighbors, which connects seniors with volunteers who assist with errands, appointments, and social visits. Additional programs from the New York City Department for the Aging provide access to older-adult centers, healthy meals, and educational resources throughout the city.
It's one of those places where you can sit down all by yourself but not feel alone.
