Meet Miss Debbie
I am Miss Debbie, the Playground Associate at Washington Square Park. My job is a unique role and only exists because of the collaboration between the NYC Parks Department and the Washington Square Park Conservancy.
At the picnic tables in the playground by the northeast corner of the park, I lead arts and crafts projects for children and their families and invite our community to create. While I always demonstrate the projects I introduce to the kids, I tell them to express the art how they see it.
In my work with these children, I love that I can continue the long history of arts and culture in Washington Square Park. This park has always been filled with arts and music for people of all backgrounds, existing as a haven for people at the margins of the dominant culture. In Washington Square Park, you can be who you really are. Through my work, I encourage children to learn about and feel comfortable with their authentic selves.
I love my job and this park. Because this is a public space, it comes with challenges. My job isn’t just creating fun programs for kids–I also help make sure the children stay safe while they’re enjoying the playground.
