Did You See That?

Washington Square Park is where New York City’s creativity comes alive! For generations, this iconic space has been a cultural hub–a place where the arts flourish and community gathers to celebrate. This year, the park is buzzing with even more energy thanks to a vibrant lineup of events brought to the park by an array of community organizations.

The season kicked off with a showcase of four incredible local musicians from Show Brain in May. Every Tuesday in the month of June the Washington Square Music Festival filled the air with the sounds of classical and contemporary music, a cornerstone of summers in the park since 1953. And to wrap up August, the Washington Square Park Folk Festival will return for its 14th season of knee-slapping jams this Sunday, August 25th starting at 1pm.

In October, eGALitarian Brass will once again grace the stage. This ensemble of women and non-binary brass players will perform a repertoire of new works by diverse composers that break the boundaries of chamber music. And while one of this summer’s storms meant that Manhattan Summer Winds couldn’t perform in the park, their wind ensemble would have ensured an enjoyable number for every music lover. Here’s to hoping next year stays dry!

Don’t miss TNC’s newest show!

Acted performances, whether on stage or silver screen, continue to play a significant role in the park’s cultural offerings. Films on the Green, in collaboration with the French Embassy, transforms the park into an outdoor cinema each summer, where New Yorkers can enjoy French films under the stars. And our friends from Theater for the New City, known for its avant-garde productions, will bring cutting-edge theater to the park with this season’s production of “The Socialization Of A Social Worker Or Justice In A Time Of Need” this Saturday, August 24th at 2pm. If you’d prefer something more off-the-cuff, the comedic stylings of New York Laughs might be right up your alley with their open-air festival of standout NYC comedians in October.

Dance and joyful movement is always at home in Washington Square Park. On one end of the spectrum you can find traditional folk dances, like those exhibited by Multiculture Center Kaleidoscope in their May performance. Or “Portraits of the Moon,” by Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), a dance project that will intricately explore and celebrate the rich symbolism of the moon in Chinese culture  in September. We’ll also welcome more modern styles like Dances for a Variable Population. In addition to their weekly Tuesday morning sessions in the park, sponsored by WSPC, their final performance in October celebrates the season of work promoting health, creativity, and community, proving that dance is a universal language that can bring people together.

Rounding out this season’s cultural offerings is TreeWonder, a community-based program that takes a unique approach by blending environmental education with art, offering workshops that teach participants about the importance of trees and urban green spaces through creative expression.

These artistic endeavors add variety to the Conservancy’s recurring weekly line up, bringing unique experiences all season long. That’s why WSPC proudly supports each of these events with a monetary grant. Now in its 9th season, the Community Arts Grants program will have distributed $80,000 in funds to over a dozen organizations since its inception. This funding not only helps to sustain these varied artistic endeavors but also encourages the development of new programs that reflect the dynamic, ever-evolving nature of the city.

By supporting these organizations, the Conservancy helps ensure that Washington Square Park remains a vibrant, inclusive space. This year’s grantees continue to uphold the park’s legacy as a place where creativity thrives and where New Yorkers from all walks can come together through the power of the arts. Whether you’re here for the music, the dance, the theater, or just to soak in the atmosphere, Washington Square Park is the place to get creative this season!
