Booming in Bloom
As spring blooms and the warmer weather seems here to stay, Washington Square Park is gearing up for the usual seasonal surge in activity. With Car Free Earth Day closing the streets around the park to vehicular traffic, the greatly anticipated release of Taylor Swift’s newest album, and the unofficial cannabis holiday of 4/20 all falling this weekend, the park is going to be as bustling as we’ve seen it yet this year. So what can you do to prepare for the crowds? We’ve got you covered!
Know the rules:
The best way to ensure that everyone and their myriad of activities can enjoy Washington Square Park together is to follow park rules. Please walk all wheeled devices for the safety of your fellow park-goer (yes, skateboards included!), refrain from using technologically amplified sound, and remember that smoking or vaping of any kind is not allowed in NYC public parks. Do your part to keep the breathing air clean for the many flora and fauna that call the park home.
Pitch in:
Show your love for the park by signing up for one of our volunteer clean-up events! The park can always use some TLC during and after particularly busy days. Join us on April 20th or April 22nd from 9:30am-11:30am to lend a hand keeping the park clean. It’s a great way to give back to the community while enjoying being outside!
Respect the space:
Even if you don’t volunteer, you can do your part to keep the park looking good! Don’t forget to pick up after yourself if you spread out on a lawn or find a shady seat in one of the plazas. Use the conveniently placed trash cans located throughout the park, or carry out your refuse to another location.
Go with purpose:
Find the crowds a bit daunting without a plan? Make one! The Washington Square Park Conservancy hosts a weekly slate of programs in the park starting May 1. With offerings from art to fitness, there’s something for park-goers of all ages, abilities, and interests. Check out what’s on offer this season.
Support your Park:
The park is buzzing with energy and excitement, but maintaining its beauty and ensuring a welcoming environment for all requires ongoing effort and resources, especially as the season picks up. Your donation can make a significant difference in supporting maintenance, community events, and initiatives that enhance the park experience for everyone. Whether it’s contributing to regular clean-up efforts, funding free programming, or supporting the installation of new amenities, every dollar counts towards preserving and improving Washington Square Park.
Together we can do more than enjoy the season, we can actively shape the vibrant atmosphere of our beloved park.
