Calling all tree-lovers: at the request of NYC Parks, the Conservancy is launching our newest volunteer program, our Washington Sq Waterers! This program is all about keeping newly-planted street trees around the Park thriving and green, and they need your help to make it happen.

Trees are incredibly important for maintaining a healthy and beautiful environment, particularly in a dense urban setting like NYC. They provide shade, improve air quality, and reduce the urban heat island effect caused when cities replace natural land with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat. But the city isn’t any easier on young trees than any other transplant. Urban trees have to contend with drought, heat waves, and poor soil conditions. Regular watering, particularly in the early years of growth, is one of the most effective ways to help them grow into a lush and healthy urban canopy.

That’s where the Washington Sq Waterers program comes in! Volunteers are asked to commit to a season from May to November and serve a minimum of four 1-hour watering shifts each month. You can make your own schedule, choosing your preferred shifts from Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with occasional Saturdays from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Conservancy and Park staff will teach you everything you need to know about the trees, watering techniques, and how to use our snazzy watering system. We’ll even get you outfitted with all the necessary tools and some fun Park swag. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert arborist – the program is open to everyone who loves nature and wants to make a difference while spending some extra time in the best Park in NYC.

This new program is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in your community and make a positive impact on your environment. You’ll meet other Park enthusiasts, learn about the importance of urban trees, and get hands-on making a difference in your Park. By signing up you’ll be part of an incredible community of WSP volunteers who are passionate about keeping the Park clean and beautiful. You’ll be helping to create a healthier, more vibrant, and more beautiful urban environment for everyone to enjoy. And who knows – maybe you’ll even inspire others to get involved and make a difference too!

So why wait? Sign up today and start watering those trees like a pro!
