Thank you, George!
We here at WSPC are bidding a fond farewell to George Vellonakis. They say all good things must come to pass, and after three beautiful years, George is retiring from his dual role as Washington Square Park’s Administrator, and Conservancy Executive Director. He has worked as a landscape architect for NYC Parks since 1986, and was responsible for the 2007 renovation of WSP. He has held the position of Conservancy Executive Director since 2017.
“George’s leadership and vision have been an integral part of the Conservancy’s success these last few years”, says Elizabeth Ely, Chairman of WSPC. “We wish him the best as he begins the next chapter of his life.”
George is well-known for his design of Washington Square Park, which was entirely restored and improved through his three-phase plan completed in June 2014. During his time as Executive Director, George expanded the Conservancy’s support of the Park, adding four additional full-time positions in the Conservancy’s landscapes, maintenance, and community programs. He also envisioned and completed a restoration of the Park’s largest lawn and worked with State Senator Brad Hoylman (NY-27) to replace all the Park’s existing trash receptacles and add 10 more.
“He will be missed, but we eagerly look ahead to the future of the Conservancy and Washington Square Park,” continues Elizabeth. “With the support of our community we will continue to grow and provide additional resources for our neighborhood’s beloved Park. Together we’ll keep Washington Square Park clean, safe and beautiful.”
