Walking Tour with Bowery Boys Walks – The Battle for Washington Square Park: Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses
In the 1950s, Jane Jacobs, Shirley Hayes, and community activists fought the plan of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses to extend Fifth Avenue south through Washington Square Park. Join us on a walking tour in partnership with Bowery Boy Walks to learn about the history of this battle to protect our beloved park. Aaron Schielke, a licensed New York City tour guide, will lead this tour. We will dive into the details of Moses’s plan, discuss the events that lead to the roadway’s eventually defeat, and consider how this project relates to broader ideas around urban planning in post–World War II New York City.
