Fall Flower Walk through WSP

September 9 2021

Sunday is Grandparents’ Day, and there’s no better place to celebrate the grandparent in your life than with a nature walk through Washington Square Park! Follow along with the instructions below to find and ID some of the most beautiful plants thriving in the Park right now.

#1: Canna Lily ‘Emerald Sunset’

Start in the NE Corner of the Park, and look up! Those incredibly tall, bright orange flowers you see planted in the round garden bed right at the entrance are a type of Canna Lily called ‘Emerald Sunset’.

#2: Rudbeckia “Goldstrum”

Next, walk down the pathway that leads diagonally from the NE corner into Garibaldi Plaza (the space with the stage and the monument). As you walk, it’s impossible to miss the massive swath of bright yellow Rudbeckia “Goldstrum” aka “Black-Eyed Susan”. This is just one of many spots you can find this beautiful bloom in the Park.

#3: Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost.’

From there, continue through Garibaldi Plaza and head towards the Fountain. As you pass by the partarre (those are the rectangular beds running down the center of the Park) peak over the hedges to find the profusion of tiny white flowers called Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost.’

#4: “Honorine Jobert”

Cross through Fountain Plaza and head towards the Holley monument. Take a look behind the bronze and limestone monument and you’ll find the tall and graceful “Honorine Jobert” anemone. Their dainty blossoms bob in the slightest breeze.

#5: Liriope muscari

For our last stop, head along the center most pathway from Holley Plaza towards the west side of the Park. On your right hand side look behind the benches to spot the Liriope muscari. While these evergreen plants keep their dark foliage year round, it’s only this time of year that the purple flowers bloom.

We hope you enjoyed this nature walk. You’ll find many of these flowers in multiple places throughout the Park, so as you’re walking through keep your eyes peeled and see if you can spot your favorites!
