Our Top 5 Picnic Spots in WSP

April 8 2021

Washington Square Park was recently named one of the top 12 picnic locations in NYC by Gotham Magazine. But once you get here, what’s the best spot to lay out your blanket? We’ve got the inside scoop.

#1 – under the Kwanzan Cherries

Top of the list is the SW lawn. If you park yourself under the Kwanzan cherry trees you get a perfect view of the Arch and Fountain. Bonus points if the trees are in bloom.

# 2 – in front of the petanque court

Offering an equally stunning view of the Arch and Fountain as #1, our second pick boasts a blooming Yoshino cherry tree in early spring that transforms into a lush green canopy as the season progresses. Plus you have the added bonus of potential entertainment from the players behind you.

#3 – the NW lawn

The biggest, recently renovated, lawn in the Park has plenty of room here for you to spread out. If you face south, you can people-watch in Fountain Plaza while soaking up some rays.

#4 – behind the stage

The perfect spot if you want to be a bit removed from the hustle and bustle in the middle of the Park. And plenty of shade for those looking to stay out of the sun!

#5 – the Play Hills

Best for those with children, spreading out here gives adults the perfect chance to chat while kids occupy themselves on the unique cabling play feature.
