For nearly 350 years, the majestic English Elm (Ulmus procera) has stood at the Northwest corner of what is now Washington Square Park. Thought to be one of the oldest trees in Manhattan, it holds the knowledge of our shared history, brings beauty and respite in this urban environment, and like so many of us, is an immigrant to this country and this community. A survivor through conditions of adversity, our Elm is a refuge, a sentinel, a voice for this Park we hold so dear.
