COMMITTED VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES – OPEN NOW!

WSPC is proud to bolster the work of hard-working NYC Parks staff across maintenance and horticulture with committed volunteering opportunities. We ask all committed volunteers to stay a part of the WSPC team for at least an entire parks season (roughly six months) Find out more about each team below:

Clean Team

Help keep the park clean as a dedicated part of our Clean Team! Clean Teamers assist park staff by collecting litter, scraping off stickers, and wiping away graffiti. You make your own schedule, (program runs during NYC Parks staff hours, 7:30am-6pm, 7 days a week) and determine your own work-load. Following a required orientation, we request that you work a shift of 45-60 minutes at least twice per month. Clean Team orientations are open for registration now!

Wednesday Weeders

Do you live in the city and wish you had the chance to care for a garden? The Wednesday Weeders could be the opportunity for you! We rely on Weeders to be experienced gardeners who know how to operate with minimal supervision. You will get to know all our garden beds as well as our Horticultural Coordinator who will act as a as if they’re your own while removing weeds, planting, and helping with other horticulture projects. Our weeders meet each Wednesday (weather permitting) between 9am and 12pm and can work 1, 2, or 3 hours in that frame. Orientations for Weeders will open in March. Stay up to date by signing up for our newsletter!

Washington Square Waterers

Trees are a huge part of what makes this park so welcoming and comfortable for everyone. Our young trees always need extra help getting enough water to thrive here and you can be a part of that effort as a volunteer! WSPC staff will teach you everything you need to know about our trees and how to properly water them. We ask that you commit one or two hours per week for this program. Orientations for Washington Square Waterers will open in April. Stay up to date by signing up for our newsletter!

Community Clean Ups

Three cheers for our volunteers! We’ve officially wrapped up our drop-in volunteer opportunities for the year. Thank you for a wonderful season!

With 200 volunteers coming out and a new series just for students, 2025 saw the park’s volunteer power reach new heights. We hope to see you in the spring for more Community Clean Ups! Want to learn more? Sign up for our email list!

SATURDAY CLEAN UP: Spend a weekend morning volunteering with us and give back to the Park you love! On the second Saturday of each month we hit the park with a group of volunteers to keep things looking beautiful. Work consists of weeding, raking leaves, mulching, planting, and other work – whatever is necessary to keep Washington Square Park clean, safe and beautiful. No experience is needed for this program and there is no long-term commitment. And for the first time ever, this year we’ll be offering a special 1pm shift specifically for students looking to fulfill community service hours.

THIRD THURSDAY CLEAN UP : spend a Thursday afternoon pitching in at the park! This weekday edition of our clean ups gives you the chance to volunteer in afternoon instead of morning hours on the Third Thursday of each month.

Ages 14+ please, those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Photography Volunteers
If you’ve seen WSPC share a beautiful photo of the park, it was probably taken by a volunteer Parktographer! This artistic bunch takes candid photos in the park as well as helping to photograph special events. Check out some of their work on our Instagram 📸

Greeter/Guides – Washington Square Park Docents
Found out and about at events or on particularly beautiful days in the Park, our Greeters answer questions from park users on various topics, from park horticulture and history to events and happenings. Some Greeters take things a step further and choose to become tour guides, developing their unique tour of the park under the guidance of Conservancy staff. If you see one of them out with our Welcome Wagon, be sure to stop by and say hello! If you ask, they may even have a special bit of park swag for you.
