A Season of Thanks

November 21 2024

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, we asked some MVPs (most valuable park-people) what they’re thankful for in Washington Square Park this year. From staff to neighbors the answers ranged from the sweet to the silly, check them out!

Donald with his trusty pressure washer

Will (Executive Director): “I am thankful for many things but particularly the park’s irrigation system this year that has allowed our horticulture areas to weather the drought conditions favorably before turning them off in accordance with water-saving measures.”

Donald (Caretaker): “As the park’s graffiti expert, I’m always grateful for my removal supplies. Having the right tool for the job makes things go smoother. It’s a satisfying job, keeping this park looking its best.”

Arlene (Board Member): “I am thankful for my family, friends, my colleagues at NYU, and all the great people I have the pleasure of working with in the community.”

Ashley (Deputy Director): “I am thankful for the many wonderful green spaces (especially Washington Square Park!) that provide respite amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City. And a special thanks to the park’s pigeons, they bring me joy every time I see them getting up to their antics.”

Liana (Development Associate): “I am grateful for all the Parks staff who do such amazing work to care for the park and the donors of the Conservancy who make that work possible. There’s so much that needs to be done, and I’m glad the park can rely on them.”

Volunteers pose mid trash pick up

Tyson (Gardener): “I’m thankful for the optimistic spirit of those around me. Life can be difficult, but I’m lucky to have people around me who keep a positive outlook, it’s an important thing.”

Kaitlyn (Programs Manager): “I’m grateful for the dedication of our volunteers who contributed about 1500 hours of work to the park this year – whether it be weekend warriors raking leaves, Washington Square Waterers taking care of our trees, or Parktographers documenting our public programs – the park is all the better from their hard work!”

Veronica (Board Member): “I’m so grateful to the dedicated staff who work so hard for our wonderful park. Each day I am thankful for the joy, energy and creativity that happens in our park”

Grace (Community Relations Director): “I’m grateful for the park pollinators that keep the trees and flowers so happy! The magnolias and cherry blossom trees are some of my favorite parts of the park and they wouldn’t thrive without our littlest gardeners.”
